Reflective Thinking

Content Reflection:

Reflecting on the nature of an issue or client presenting concern or situation.

Process reflection:

Analysing the efficacy of a practice using feedback data.

E.g. a therapist reviewing their approach to therapy.

Premise reflection (critical reflection):

Reflecting on underlying beliefs and assumptions and challenging the validity of their presuppositions.

E.g. considering ones own cultural identity and constructions of normality

Reflective Writing

  • Is a more effective method of reflection

  • Usually follows some kind of structure or model for reflective writing

1. Reflection-in-action: quick thinking while you’re engaged in an

activity

2. Reflection-on-action: When you consider the activity afterwards

Reflection is a journey: 1) thinking, 2) writing, 3) practice
