Working through translators

Problems may arise if translators:

  • Interpret from their own frame of reference

  • Add their own experience, interpretations, prejudices and comments

  • Violate confidentiality

  • Jeopardise the client – professional relationships in favour of the client – translator relationship.

It is best to:

  • Work with an age-appropriate translator

  • Provide time for translator and client to develop report separately from the session

  • Talk as in speaking directly to the client

  • Observe, non-verbal responses from the client

  • Ask one question at a time

  • Not interrupt the client and interpreter while they are conversing

  • Not to make comments about the client

  • Avoid jargon

  • Allow time after the session for the interpreter to share something that they might not have felt comfortable sharing during the session

  • Use the same interpreter each time if possible

Perils of AI translations:

  • Interpreters can be inaccurate

  • Artificial intelligence interpreters miss nuances and context

  • Emotional tone may not be interpreted accurately
